I know this is an old thread, but if anybody is still having this problem, I know the solution. The ribbon wire connecting the hold switch/headphone jack to the motherboard in this case has been displaced and is wedged in between the hard drive and the aluminum frame holding the ipod together. This is creating a short in the wire connecting the switch to the mobo. To correct the problem open your ipod up (There are plenty of tutorials online) and move the wire around until it is not so deeply wedged onto the side of the casing.

Great Ipod blog you have here! Keep up the good work. You should always make
sure your Ipod's battery is fresh and fully functional. http://www.kurttasche.com/recommends/ipodjuice

Hey, I have this problem too. And indeed, this seems due to a recent firmware update (can't narrow down to which one, though). Does Apple own up to this problem?

I have a similar problem- engage hold and screen goes black like it should, take the hold off and screen activates sometimes playing a song and always battery quite drained. Kinda frustrating- am wondering if it's a battery problem as my ipod is 1 1/2 yr old. anyone have this going on?

Yep, same problem here, although not always reproducable. It seems a bit at random...
