MAMP was the problem. Simply restarting the server actually caused the symptoms to disappear. Thanks again, Joseph, for helping me out on this!

Thanks! Now I'm wondering if MAMP is the culprit. More testing is needed on my part. It's a relief to know that it probably isn't a WordPress issue.

I tried this on a brand new WP 3.3.1 install on my Mac. I don't use MAMP, just the stock Apache running on 10.6.8.

I followed all of your steps and I haven't been able to reproduce the results. I added several other Pages in WP and was stil not able to trigger anything.

I highly doubt it. I did try it in both Firefox and Chrome and the behavior was identical. Also, if it were the browser it wouldn't make sense that the number of pages in WordPress would make a difference. Unless you have more than 2 pages it never happens. It seems to always "load" the next page in order of ID no matter where that page is in the menu.

Are you sure this isn't a behavior of your browser?

Hey Jason, this is such a cool post. Thank you. I've been working on ideas how to improve my plugins site. One day I'd like to see people not only searching for WordPress plugins, but also to be able to host them too. This code is part of the puzzle. Yes I love open source. :)
BTW, the site is http://searchworpressplugins.com which is a more advanced WordPress Plugin search engine.

Hi Jason!

This is truly awesome! Been wondering for some time now how to get private plugins to pick up updates. You've saved me the trouble of having to roll up my sleeves and dig it out of WordPress itself :)

Thanks!
