I don't use MAMP, just the stock Apache running on 10.6.8. I followed all of your steps and I haven't been able to reproduce the results. I did try it in both Firefox and Chrome and the behavior was identical. Also, if it were the browser it wouldn't make sense that the number of pages in WordPress would make a difference. Unless you have more than 2 pages it never happens. It seems to always "load" the next page in order of ID no matter where that page is in the menu. I highly doubt it.
